Courses on German Language and Culture
Extracurricular course program
Exchange students have the opportunity to take courses on German language and culture during their semester in Mannheim. Courses on German culture will be held in English. Language courses are available at different levels (A1 to C1) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
These courses are open to all exchange students. Registration costs EUR 20 per course.
This fee is not refundable, not even if you cannot participate in the course. Please note that the course will not take place if there are not enough participants.
General information
- You can register for a maximum of three courses (courses on German language and/
or culture) per semester. - You can only register for one parallel group of a course type.
- It is not possible to register for courses at different levels.
- Levels A1.1 – A2.1:
- It is not possible to attend only one course day per week.
- And it is not possible to attend one course day respectively in two parallel groups.
- Courses may be canceled at short notice if there are not enough participants.
- You are required to attend the first day of the course.
Please be sure to carefully read the information on registration fees and conditions.
If you are studying at the University of Mannheim for two semesters, you can take courses twice, but it is not possible to receive ECTS credits again or improve your final grade. This means that you can only attend the course again to repeat the contents.

Level and proof of language proficiency
To register for a course, you must first submit your level of language proficiency to the International Office using the relevant questionnaire in Mobility Online.
The questionnaire will be activated when you receive the information e-mail in July or December.
Students with no previous German language skills Students with previous German language skills It is not necessary to take a placement test. Please indicate in your Mobility Online workflow that you have no previous German language skills. We will then place you in a level A1.1 course. Please complete the online placement test and upload the result (pdf, jpeg, png) to your Mobility Online workflow. Deadline is 13 August 2025.
The International Office will confirm your level of language proficiency.
Please note: You cannot register for courses at a different level than the one you have been assigned. If you wish to change your level, please contact germancourses well in advance of the registration period. uni-mannheim.deRegistration and de-registration
Course registration
- Course registration takes place via Portal² and is only possible after you have informed the International Office of your level of language proficiency (see Level and proof of language proficiency).
- You can only register for a course provided that your level of language proficiency has been confirmed. Your level of language proficiency will be confirmed by e-mail.
- Please carefully read the instructions for course registration in advance.
- Please be sure to carefully select and only register for those courses on German language and culture that do not overlap with your regular course schedule. It is not easily possible to change courses or parallel groups if you have registered for several courses taking place at the same time and subsequently receive admission to another course.
- Please be sure to carefully read the information on registration fees and the associated conditions.
The registration period is from 15 August 2025, 9 a.m. to 27 August 2025, 2 p.m. (CEST).
Places in the German language courses will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, while places in the courses on German culture will be allocated by lottery.
Wait list
The course you wanted to take is fully booked? In this case, you can register for the wait list.
If a place becomes available in the course you would like to attend, we will inform the first person on the wait list by e-mail providing a short deadline for response and acceptance. After the deadline has passed, the place will be offered to the next person on the wait list.
De-registration
- During the registration period, you can de-register from the courses on German language and culture in Portal² yourself.
- After the registration period has ended, it is no longer possible to de-register via Portal². Instead, you must do so via the International Office.
- Please note that the registration fee is due after the end of the registration period. Please carefully read the information provided under Registration fees and conditions.
Registration fees and conditions
- The registration fee for courses on German language and culture is EUR 20 per course. This fee is not refundable.
- After the registration period has ended, the International Office will calculate the fees for the German language courses.
- You will receive notification of the registration fee due, including payment information and the payment deadline, usually within one week after the registration deadline has expired, and you can also view the fee in Portal² (MyStudies > Student Service > Bills and Payment).
Please note that this is a registration fee, not a course fee. This means that you are required to pay the registration fee of EUR 20 per course even if you do not actually attend the course that you have registered for. A registration fee is also due if you register after the registration period has ended.
Transcript of Records and ECTS credits
You will receive a grade and the corresponding number of ECTS credits for participating in a course. However, in order to be awarded ECTS credits you need to successfully complete the course. Types of examination vary depending on the course: final examination, several tests and written examination, presentation, etc. Your teacher will inform you of the form of the examination during the course.
Please check with your home university in advance whether ECTS credits can be recognized for courses on language and culture. The International Office has no influence on the courses being recognized by your home university.
Would you like to take a German language course but not include it in your Transcript of Records? In this case, you can take the course but refrain from registering for the exam.
Payment of the registration fee
Organizational information
You are required to attend the first day of the course. Otherwise, you will lose your spot on the course and can no longer attend. Courses are limited to a maximum of 15 participants. In view of the limited number of participants we kindly ask you to select courses carefully. When planning your semester schedule, please make sure that the classes of your courses on German language and culture do not conflict with the classes of your regular curriculum. If you de-register in time, your spot can be offered to other students on the waiting list.
ECTS credits
If you have successfully participated in one or more courses, you will receive the corresponding number of ECTS credits. Successful completion of the examinations forms the basis for the awarding of ECTS credits. Examinations vary depending on the course and may include one final written exam, several tests and a written exam, a presentation and so on. Your teacher will inform you about the form of examination during the course.
Please note: Please check with your home institution in advance whether the ECTS credits earned from language and culture courses will be recognized. The International Office has no influence on the recognition of courses at your home institution.
